Seville enchants

The 'Castles in Seville Route, meeting of cultures' reveals the valuable architectural and historical legacy of these jewels housed in numerous municipalities of the province, showing to visitors the living remains of history scattered throughout Seville.

Since the Muslim period, the defence of Al-Andalus became a primary objective and that is the reason why castles were built in fortifications located in strategic places. Most of them are over six centuries old, witnesses of the Middle Ages, built by the Arab population to defend themselves from the Christians fighting for the Reconquest.

The medieval tower of Villadiego, from the end of the 13th century, is considered the origin of this Shrine. This Mudejar-style building has an octagonal plan and is crowned with battlements. It has two floors covered with vaults, the lower a half-dome and the upper one a sail vault.

Peñaflor Castle is a defensive construction from the late Middle Ages. The existing remains date back to the Muslim and Christian periods (it is listed as a 12th-century Almohad construction). However, the site’s potential and the surface ceramics found appear to suggest the existence of a fortified building from earlier times.
