Cascadas del Hueznar

Seville enchants

Although its official name is Our Lady of Candelaria Convent, it has also been known as San Francisco or Victoria convent. It was founded on 1 February 1555 by Juan Téllez Girón, 4th Count of Ureña.

The Jesuits came to Utrera and founded a convent with a school. The Rodrigo Caro School stands now on that site. All that remains is this church, known as St Francis the New, the sacristy and the meeting room.

This temple, opened in March 1769, was the first building constructed in this village. Due to the epidemic of “Tercianas” or malaria, the church was used as a hospital for men and renamed “Juan Bautista Alvitt”.

It is a typical baroque church built during Pablo de Olavide’s repopulation initiative under King Carlos III.

This small Mudejar church has a typical mountain architecture consisting of a single nave with transversal arches and a standalone main chapel. The chapel is covered with a dome crowned by a cupola that was added during the Baroque period. The main entrance, at the west end, is also Baroque. The pointed arch on the right wall, obscured by several adjacent rooms, is Mudejar.

This church is of the tower-façade type, of which there are several in the diocese of Seville. It attracts attention because of its originality, specifically because of the marked contrast between the whiteness of its walls and the decorative stone and brick motifs on the main doorway and other parts of the façade.

This building has a single nave with transversal arches. Hernández Díaz has dated the structure to the first third of the 14th century based on the semi-circular shape of the apse, the moulding on the presbytery’s toral arch and the entranceways.

The Parish Church of Our Lady of Virtues is a clear example of the historical path of La Puebla de Cazalla. The Church dates back to the 16th century, when Juan Téllez de Girón, Duke of Osuna, ordered its construction under her advocacy. Both the fortress and the Castle were part of the estate of the Ducal House of Osuna. Consequently, the Duke decided that the town should be repopulated.
