Santa Ángela de la Cruz Convent

This convent is located opposite the San Juan Bautista Parish Church, at the highest point of the town. It houses a community of nuns founded by Saint Angela of the Cross. Its location, in the centre of the old town, was ideal for its charitable activities. However, it is hard to park nearby due to the narrow streets. The building is in a good state of repair. The interior can only be visited during religious services. The Convent of Santa Ángela de la Cruz in Las Cabezas de San Juan was founded by the Counts of Villacreces on 17 April 1943. Its most striking feature is its simple chapel, which consists of a single nave with a bell gable and unadorned exterior.

Highlights inside include a baroque altarpiece from Carmona and several remarkable sculptures. The rest of the convent is of minor significance, as austerity is the norm of this female congregation dedicated to helping the poor.

Nonetheless, it cannot be overlooked that the building was originally the Zuleta Palace; therefore, the layout of its interior befits this origin. It has an open-air cloister in the centre with rooms distributed throughout its two-storeys. The nuns’ cells are in the upper level, while the common areas are in the lower level. A stately staircase connects both floors. It has a beautiful chapel with a splendid high altarpiece that holds an image of the Immaculate Conception. Other sculptures include Our Lady of Health, a bust of the Virgin Mary, and the image of Our Lady of Antigua by José Delgado Brankenbury, donated by his daughter María Belén Delgado in 2002.
