In Spain, the road worker was responsible for maintaining and repairing every league (equivalent to about five and a half kilometres) of the roads. He was paid five “reales” a day plus a shared accommodation in the state-owned house assigned to the worker located every half a league. The rights over these houses have now been devolved to the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.

Nowadays, this house is used as the headquarters of the Peña Flamenca la Reja, where numerous performances and events are held. They organise every year the “Las Aguzaderas” flamenco night in mid-July.
