Its name could originate from the working of its quarries, where the material necessary for the construction of the road that led from Estepa to Seville and the production of cannonballs was extracted.

The municipality boasts areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the Sierra de la Cruz, the Fuente de la Higuera and the El Búho Nature Reserve.

Sites of historical and artistic interest in the town include the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the chapel of Santo Cristo de la Sangre and the parish church of San Sebastián.
