The Fiesta del Verdeo serves as a symbol in that it kick-starts the table olive harvesting season, known as “verdeo”. The name comes from the fact that the valuable olives are harvested when they are not yet fully mature and have a characteristic green colour.

The origin of the Harvest Festival dates back to 1954, when it was established with the aim of publicising the quality of the wines obtained from the vineyards of Villanueva del Ariscal.

The Osuna May Fair was declared an Andalusian Festival of Tourist Interest by the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Sport in 2008. It is considered "a manifestation that helps advance the values and traditions of this municipality and of Andalusia, and promotes, develops and disseminate tourism".
