Montellano, natural and architectural beauty in the heart of Sierra Sur

Montellano is in the heart of Seville's Sierra Sur, a town that stands out for its beautiful surroundings. Enjoy the striking landscape of Sierra de San Pablo and Los Tajos de Mogarejo, an escarpment declared a Natural Monument in 2003.

As you walk along its nature routes, you will come across the remains of Castillo de Cote, a medieval fortress with four apses, unique in Spain. Montellano also has a rich architectural heritage that gives insight into its history. Some of the must-see tourist sights are the San José Church, the former Casino (social club) and the Fountain and Washhouse area.

Mark in your calendar the most eagerly awaited festivals in Montellano, including the San Isidro Labrador Pilgrimage, an event of National Tourist Interest, and the Feria de Jubileos in August. You must also sample its famous typical products, such as morcilla de asaduras, artisan bread and olive oil.

Getting to Montellano

If you travel by car from Seville, take the A-376 road that links with the A-375 and will take you straight to your destination.

This town does not have a train station, but you can get there by bus from Prado de San Sebastián Bus Station in Seville.

Would you like to see the future stars of flamenco? Come to the Festival Flamenco de Artistas No Consagrados in July. Famous artists such as Sara Baras, Antonio Carrión, Paco Serrano, La Yerbabuena and José Galán, among others, got their first break here.

What to see

The San José Church, a Baroque-style temple, is located uptown. It is home to the patron saint, Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. During the Feria de Los Jubileos in August, this sculpture is carried in procession. If you can, visit Montellano around that time and enjoy this eagerly awaited festival.

Continue through the uptown and enjoy its steep streets lined with whitewashed houses, perfect for taking beautiful photographs.

Make your way to Calle de la Cruz and look out for the Casino, which dates back to 1911. Its Mudejar-style balcony is noteworthy. The nearby Calle Matahacas houses the Shrine to El Cristo de Los Remedios. Its architecture is very similar to that of the San José Church. Doña Remedios García Barrera, a local woman, donated the funds in the 19th century to build this church uptown so that disabled people could go to mass. This shrine is home to the oldest sculpture in the town, San Pablo de la Breña, beloved by the inhabitants of Montellano.

Another remarkable religious monument on this street is the Safa Chapel, built in 1938 next to the Don Bosco Salesian School. The fountain, drinking trough and public washhouse, all built in 1875, are located downtown. The tank where the water from the Sierra de San Pablo was collected was also in this area.

You can admire the Casa de Ancianos on Calle Ruiz Ramos. Its chapel has stained-glass windows, and its main altar is a genuine work of art. This beautiful building, dating from 1929, was designed by the architect Vicente Traver, designer of the Lope de Vega Theatre and Central Bank in Seville. The Hermanas de la Cruz Chapel, also built in the 20th century, is located on Calle Corbacho Reina. This neo-Gothic temple is stunning.

Lastly, explore a route through Montellano's impressive natural surroundings. Remember, Los Tajos de Mogarejo was declared a Natural Monument. You can also visit the ruins of the Castillo de Cote in the Sierra de San Pablo. The architecture of its 13th-century tower house is unique in the Iberian Peninsula, as it has four apses rising from an almost octagonal base. Cote's landscape has been declared an Andalusian Site of Cultural Interest.

Montellano is 68 kilometres from Seville in the Sierra Sur region. The southern part of its municipal district borders the province of Cádiz, along the course of the River Guadalete. The Sierra de San Pablo and Los Tajos de Mogarejo, an escarpment declared a Natural Monument, can be found close by.
